Xbox Scarlett: Is it the Revamped Xbox One?

2019 is about to end and so is Xbox’s incompetency, claims executive vice-president of Gaming at Microsoft, Phil Spencer, in an interview with The Verge. Xbox hasn’t had a very fruitful run; their last generation of the console was dominated by PS4 by all means. Xbox One was overpriced and underpowered, Spencer admits and declares that the folks at Microsoft have learned their lesson and now coming with Xbox Scarlett.

Unlike its predecessor (Xbox 360) which was an iconic and a massive hit serving the interests of a variety of gamers, hosting free and quality multiplayer gaming (unlike PlayStation and its PlayStation plus policies) to delivering successful Xbox exclusives like Gears of War and Halo, Xbox One just didn’t have anything to offer. Xbox fans were in for a major disappointment, the new console just didn’t deliver, be it the games or the performance, everything fell flat. Even the impressive Xbox One’s Kinect couldn’t make many waves. But let’s be fair, neither did the original Kinect do any wonders.

This failure is acknowledged and being worked on says Spencer, the PS5 has been announced to be released in 2020 Holiday and there have been no such release dates announced for Xbox Scarlett. But the Chief of Xbox himself says that they are ready to compete this time and they are focusing on cross-play and backward compatibility, besides developing a beast of a console.

Xbox Scarlett would have 8k gaming, 120 fps, which will be a massive jump, the revolutionary and exciting-ray tracing and variable refresh rate support, backed by an SSD and custom CPUs by AMD. But unlike Sony, Microsoft hasn’t revealed much about Xbox Scarlett yet, about the line-up of consoles and the upcoming titles.

Primarily the Vice-President aims to win back the Xbox fans and to be level with PlayStation, as Xbox One was about $100 costlier and weaker than PS4. He further discussed gaming in general and how PC gaming at Microsoft is a sphere that he aims to expand.

The last generation of good games was almost all for PS4, be it the Uncharted series or the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, Xbox players were left with an unsatisfying Gears of War 5.

PS5 is said to be having an “acceptable” price according to the Sony’s CFO, so Xbox will be certainly cautious about not overpricing their next-generation after losing all the sales of Xbox One to PS4 in the last generation Console battle.

Besides the unique feature of backward compatibility which made a few fans happy, the fact that Xbox is pushing Cross-platform play somewhat mirrors Microsoft’s past where it pushed the boundaries of multiplayer gaming. In an era of exclusives, be it streaming content or playing video games, the uniting concept of Cross-platform play is widely accepted and revered, which is very evident with the success and the audience games like Fortnite has amassed.

As the ever so confident Sony has trademarked PS 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 already, Spencer informed that Microsoft has no plans of stopping the Xbox either, they want to continue and compete for every other generation.

For now, the coming generation of consoles seems to be promising and driven, PlayStation clearly won the last battle but Xbox is geared up and ready for the next one, unblemished, kind of. Either way, gamers certainly have a lot to look forward to.
