It is a good time to create competition against the Chinese short video platform TikTok as there is anger from all over the world against the Chinese and #BoycottChina is taking shape worldwide. Now, YouTube is planning to target TikTok with a new 15-second recording feature.

Facebook and Instagram already entered the game of short-video markets with their respective platforms called Lasso and Reels. So why shouldn’t YouTube, right? Well, YouTube is planning to target TikTok too and the timing couldn’t have been better.

YouTube is Planning to Target TikTok

Starting earlier this week, YouTube said that it is letting some people record short videos with a new feature called multi-segment videos. The feature is rolling out to test for some users on both Android and iOS.

The whole idea with this multi-segment videos is to record small videos conveniently from the mobile and then the feature will merge them into one video.

We’re testing out a new way for creators to easily record multiple clips directly in the YouTube mobile app and upload as one video. If you’re in this experiment, you’ll see an option to ‘create a video’ in the mobile upload flow. Tap or hold the record button to record your first clip, then tap again or release the button to stop recording that clip. Repeat these steps until you’re done capturing footage up to a maximum length of 15 seconds

And if you want to upload videos with a longer duration, then you will have to directly upload them from your phone’s gallery. With this feature, YouTube is trying to shift some of the users to upload their short content on YouTube instead of TikTok.

The whole TikTok debate is real, but the whole thing with TikTok isn’t just the short videos, it is the AI features that it offers for video editing and that kind of stuff. So a lot of people prefer to go to TikTok and find their cults and groups, it also has various challenges and stuff. If YouTube really wants to take on TikTok, it will have to bring more features to the app.
